The Brand Farm

A celebration of brands & the strategy that drives them!

Since we're so new, I'm sure some of you may be trying to figure out The Brand Farm; how to use it, what it can do for you, how it complements your other marketing and social media efforts etc. Here's what I'd offer:

Twitter is a great place for short interactions - quickly reaching out to new people and passing the word about things you have going on in your career and life.

Facebook, for most, is a great place to connect with friends and colleagues, or to create a fan page for your business to keep your network apprised of things going on with you.

LinkedIn is a phenomenal database of business contacts. It allows you to quickly 'get to' people around jobs or deals or whatever else.

The Brand Forum is a unique community just for brand professionals. Our focus is on communication and collaboration around all things BRAND! Its a place to 'talk shop' with others who share your professional interests and responsibilities. It's a great place to market yourself - not with overt pitches per se - but with the strength and insight of your ideas. As we grow, I envision our community becoming a dynamic repository of conversation, collaboration, and content about consumer brands. If you want to learn what others think about something, or share your perspectives, this will be the place. As well, if someone wants to find a strong brand person (e.g. either a client or employer), then perusing The Brand Farm will be a great way to evaluate people based upon the strengths of their content here; to see who's saying what about relevant topics, and to view member profiles.

I would encourage you to think of The Brand Farm as a tool; something that can be a source of insight and collaboration, answers, and just plain friendly dialog about brands and business. Think of it as something that you can use to market and network yourself professionally - through your posts here as well as through sharing with us the other things you're doing - including other blog posts, white papers, or articles from other sites. Feel free to post links and to share anything that you've got professionally going on! We want to know about your speaking engagements and the other interesting things that you are doing.

And, oh yeah: let's have some fun doing so! :-)

The Resurrection of Advertising

It seems like every few weeks I see a new article proclaiming the death of advertising.  With all due respect, give me a break.  For better or worse, society is becoming even more consumerist, not less.  The fundamental need of companies to share information about their products, brands, and services is getting even more important.  The desire to build profitable brands and influence consumers to like and buy things is as fundamental a part of business now as ever.  Ergo - the need for skilled…Continue

A Twinkies Turnaround

It's a marketers dream to have the chance to remake a classic.  I've often romantically pondered resuscitating fallen brand powerhouses, re-igniting dormant consumer equity to create new found financial gains.  There's just something about looking at a fallen great brand and thinking that you could do better.  I'm guessing I'm not the only marketer to do that!  The lure of the challenge…Continue

The Nivea Ad or 'The Rise and Fall of Cultural Differences in Advertising'

In advertising, companies are obviously wholly responsible for everything that emanates from them  - their products, their customer support experience, to some degree their retail context, and of course their advertising.  Since every consumer touch point is both precious and contributes to the over-all brand experience, marketers must be sure that each interaction is as strategic as possible.  Not only should every advertising dollar be positioned to create the greatest economic benefit,…Continue

The True Passion of Basketball 1 Reply

I've played a lot of basketball.  It's a sport I grew up with and "play" to this day.  I'm also a fan of all levels of the sport: from watching my 5 year old, to the NBA.  One of the things that I've always lamented about the highest level of basketball is that it is VERY rare to find it in what I consider to be its most nascent and core form - outside and on the street. I don't know about you, but I didn't grow up playing hoops in a huge stadium or even a gym.  I grew up playing it outside -…Continue
